3 Popular Summertime Allergy Myths

Most of us absolutely love summer! The weather is nice and warm! We get to hang out in the pool or on the beach! However, for a lot of people, it’s a time for allergy symptoms. Also, it’s a time for many popular allergy myths.

Below, we’ve gathered some of the most prevalent myths about summertime allergies.

1. Outdoor allergies only occur in the spring and fall.

Actually, grass pollen is a big problem in early summer. In fact, it’s the most severe right around now (June). Grass pollen causes itchy or watery eyes, sneezing or runny noses. And in areas with high humidity, it’s a lot worse.

2. Anyone allergic to mosquitoes has to stay indoors at all times.

Nobody likes a mosquito bite! They can be maddeningly itchy. And obviously, we would love to avoid them altogether. However, they very rarely cause severe allergic reactions like hives or anaphylaxis. Generally, it’s insects like bees, wasps and hornets that cause reactions like that.

3. If you look up at the sun and sneeze, you must be allergic to sunlight!

Do you instantly sneeze once you move outside? Or into an area with very bright light? Basically, it’s not the light itself that causes that reaction. Actually, it’s the change in light intensity that induces the sneeze. This sudden change triggers optic nerves that go to the brain. Next, it stimulates other nerves that cause a sneeze!

In truth, this is a very common condition. Experts believe it affects about 35% of the population. Also, it’s believed to be hereditary. It’s not harmful in any way, and there’s no medication to treat it. If you experience this, try wearing sunglasses or a hat when you go outside into sunlight. Shielding your eyes from a dramatic change in light can help prevent the sneeze reflex.
